Frequently Asked Questions

COMING SOON (This Winter): New Distribution Network
There Will Be An Update Showing  New Locations To Purchase  Ice-loc
   At  Specific Stores

Q: What size pipes are protected by ICE-LOC®?
A: ICE-LOC® is available for 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch and 1 inch pipe sizes. A Good Alternative for a larger Pipe: is to use 2 blue cores for 1 1/2inch , 2 green cores for 2 inch pipes and 3 green cores for a 3 inch pipe. Just put those cores side by side in the large pipe or pull the cores together in that pipe and at the end of the 2 cores, tie core inner twine together, no clip.
Q: Can ICE-LOC® be used in RV's and motor homes?
A: ICE-LOC® can be used anywhere that has plumbing. The most important application in a mobile home is the main line coming up behind the skirting of the trailer and into the structure. Inserting a few feet of ICE-LOC® in this pipe and extending some into the trailer wall and the ground line can greatly protect from a ruptured pipe incident from occurring again.
Q: How long does ICE-LOC® protect plumbing?
A: ICE-LOC® can provide protection to your plumbing for as long as your pipe wall integrity remains intact. Corrosion and oxidation reduces the integrity of your pipes over time.
Q: Will ICE-LOC® deteriorate after it is installed.?
A: ICE-LOC® is made from a proprietary polymer that is formulated to resist deterioration and will not fall apart in the water system even after several years of ice crushing pressures and thaw cycles as other polymers will.
Q: Will stainless steel clip deteriorate?
A: Even stainless steels will deteriorate after several years in a plumbing system with water,  dissolved chlorine and salts also depending on the metal it is grounded against. There is always a small galvanic voltage potential produced with dissimilar metals in a conductive water environment. This will cause slow long term corrosion of the wire clip. The clips should be checked in a few yrs or so and possible replacement if needed. That is why plumbing deteriorates after several years. Plastic materials will also deteriorate (for other reasons) given enough time, some much slower than others (sun exposure is the worst). Some resistant plastics and elastomers are of the polyfluorinated hydrocarbons, (Teflon, Viton etc). Expensive and not commonly used in everyday plumbing.
Q: Does ICE-LOC® prevent pipes from freezing?
A: No. ICE-LOC® is not a source of heat and is not a form of insulation that slows the freezing process.
Q: Will ICE-LOC® help thaw frozen pipes?
A: No, ICE-LOC® is not a source of heat. It is a passive device that compresses when ice expands, allowing a place to receive the new water volume. This helps to protect the pipe from rupturing.
Q: What kind of pipes can be protected with ICE-LOC®?
A: ICE-LOC® will protect PVC (Schedule 40 or better), copper pipe Types L and K and all steel pipe.

Note: Using ICE-LOCŪ on type M copper can still help on this thin walled pipe especially if there is no protection whatsoever. Thin walled Type M copper does not have a good psi rating initially.
Q: Can ICE-LOC® be used for sewer pipes or drainage pipes?
A: ICE-LOC® is not intended for sewer pipes or drainage pipes. ICE-LOC® is intended for portable water systems that freeze.
Q: How much ICE-LOC® is needed for my plumbing?
A: Typical homes have around 300 plus feet of pipe. An economical option is to protect only known problem areas. ICE-LOC® placed in the easily accessible pipes such as outside faucets may be all the protection you require. Pushing several feet of ICE-LOC® into these pipes can help protect plumbing that would otherwise be difficult to access.
Q: Can ICE-LOC® be used in very cold and in hot water delivery systems?
A: Yes, ICE-LOC® has a protective range from over 100 below 0 F to well beyond boiling temperature about 212 deg F (useful to 450 degrees F) without change to the elastomer. This high temperature would only occur in unique commercial applications or during the short time exposure of soldering temperatures of copper pipe.
Remember, after water freezes, the volume change has already taken place and not depending anymore on the elastomer properties even if it were -100 degrees F
Q: Will ICE-LOC® restrict my water flow?
A: Water flow restriction is a complex relationship between pipe diameter and water pressure.  Flow Rate: Very little effect at the same faucet settings. Of course
Pressure stays the same. Flow Rates done by One of The Top Respected Laboratories in the U.S.

Note:  The diameter of the ICE-LOC® will be much less than it appears before installation. Core gets smaller inside the pipe, when there is water pressure compressing the core.

Q: Will ICE-LOC® effect taste and purity of drinking water?
A: Since ICE-LOC® is made from a high-purity, FDA-approved elastomer, there is no contamination to the water. In fact, ICE-LOC® has a higher purity than the water pipes in your system.
Q: Can the ICE-LOC® elastomer core withstand soldering temperatures in copper plumbing?
A: ICE-LOC® can withstand temperatures of about 600 degrees F for short periods. Typical solders do not exceed 450 degrees F and low temperature silver solder may be used if melting point does not exceed 600 degrees F.
Q: Does ICE-LOC® have to be replaced after a certain time?
A: The lifespan of ICE-LOC®  should exceed the usable life of the plumbing. Most likely, rust, corrosion, oxidation and any plastic deformation of the pipe may come first.
Q: Does ICE-LOC® Affect water hammer?
A: ICE-LOC® can help eliminate water hammer in pipes. There is a cushion that you didn't have before.
Q: Does ICE-LOC® have to be replaced after a freeze?
A: ICE-LOC® will continue to help protect your plumbing after the ice thaws.
Q: What is plastic deformation?
A: Although It can occur on all types of materials, in this case it is more of a concern with plastic piping and plastic deformation is the stretching and expansion of a pipe over time due to continued pressure and flow of fluid within. Freezing greatly accelerates this deformation unless the yield strength is reached and a pipe just fails and breaks or splits.

An Example for a Copper Line:
Ever repair a 1/4 in copper air conditioner water line and cut the split bad piece out and then add a new copper piece with a union coupling? Now try to put a new brass ferrule and nut on the old copper you prepared for the splice. The old copper swelled and these new pieces can't be put on. The old copper already swelled to a larger diameter. Now you have to replace the whole run. That's plastic deformation.
Q: Does the whole system require ICE-LOC® to be protected?
A: ICE-LOC® helps protect the pipe it is applied to. An economical option is to protect only known problem areas.
Q: Can ICE-LOC® be used on older plumbing?
A: ICE-LOC® can greatly reduce the chance of pipe rupture due to freezing, as long as the pipe integrity remains in descent condition. Remember, even ICE-LOCŪ may not prevent a pipe from rupturing  if the plumbing is already in bad condition.
Q: Is ICE-LOCŪ protection Guaranteed?
A: There are so many variables in pipe quality, conditions and installation. It is virtually impossible for ICELOC Inc. to warranty other manufacturers products ( faulty valves, pipe initial condition such as oxidized deteriorated plumbing ICE-LOC® is being applied to.) or the fact someone says they installed the product correctly or bought the product and hadn't yet installed the ICE-LOC®  and pipes break before it is applied. How about someone buying the product after pipes have ruptured ( this is how many customers usually buy ICE-LOC®, they almost always have had a pipe rupture and they don't want this to happen again). It is easy to say the product was in place and now there is an expensive repair job and wanting us to pay for damages. There is no way to know what event took place first? We didn't do the install.

This Product Does Work Great And You Can Be Assured If Installed As Illustrated, It Will Save You From Repairs For Many Years With Peace Of Mind . That Is Why There Are Patents On This Product.

Q: What guarantee does ICE-LOCŪ give?

A:
ICE-LOCŪ Inc. will guarantee the Elastomer Material (Silicone Sponge) to function as intended for 15 years in potable water lines.
